DTF hot melt powder is the unsung hero of the DTF printing process. Get it right and your transfers are soft, vibrant, and wash-resistant for hundreds of cycles. Get it wrong and you'll see peeling, cracking, or a stiff hand feel. Here's everything you need to know.
What Does DTF Powder Do?
After your design is printed onto DTF film, the ink is still wet. DTF hot melt adhesive powder is applied to the wet ink, where it sticks to the surface. When cured with heat (in a shaker oven or curing unit), the powder melts and forms a strong adhesive layer. When heat-pressed onto fabric, this adhesive permanently bonds the print to the fibers.
Fine vs. Medium vs. Coarse Powder
Fine powder (80–120 micron): Best for detailed designs with small text and fine lines. Produces a softer hand feel.
Medium powder (80–200 micron): The most versatile option. Works well for most standard DTF printing.
Coarse powder (200+ micron): Better adhesion on rough or thick fabrics. Slightly firmer feel.
For most Canadian print shops starting out, medium powder is the best all-around choice. DTF Toronto carries all three grades, shipped free across Canada and the USA.
How Much Powder to Apply
You want a light, even coating over the entire printed area. Too much powder creates a thick, stiff feel and can cause cracking. Too little leaves gaps in adhesion and causes peeling after washing.
If you're using a manual shaker or applying by hand, apply the powder while the ink is still wet, then shake off the excess before curing. A shaker machine automates this process and produces more consistent results.
Curing Temperature and Time
Most DTF powders cure between 120°C and 135°C for 2–4 minutes depending on your oven. Always follow the manufacturer's specs for your specific ink and powder combination. Over-curing causes the powder to burn and reduces adhesion. Under-curing leaves the powder tacky and weak.
Common Powder Mistakes to Avoid
Applying powder to ink that is too dry: Let the ink stay wet – power off the dryer fans if needed.
Using the wrong powder for your ink: Always match powder to your ink brand when possible.
Ignoring humidity: Low humidity (under 40%) can cause powder to not stick properly.
Storing powder incorrectly: Keep in a sealed container away from moisture and heat.
