DTF Powder Canada: Fine vs Medium vs Anti-Static — Which Do You Need?

DTF adhesive powder — also called hot melt powder or DTF glue — is what makes the magic happen. It's the layer between your printed film and the garment that creates a permanent bond when heated. Choosing the right powder makes the difference between a transfer that lasts 100 washes and one that cracks after five.
How DTF Powder Works
After printing your design onto DTF film, the film goes through a powder station where hot melt adhesive powder is applied to the wet ink surface. The film then passes through a curing oven (or shaker oven) that melts the powder into a smooth, bonded layer. When heat pressed onto fabric, this adhesive layer fuses the design permanently to the fibres.
Fine DTF Powder
Fine powder has the smallest particle size, which makes it ideal for designs with small text, thin lines, and intricate details. Fine particles coat more evenly on detailed areas, producing crisp edges and clean transfers.
Best for:
Small text (under 0.5" tall)
Fine line artwork and detailed logos
Photo-quality transfers where sharpness matters
White or light fabrics where adhesion is critical
Medium DTF Powder
Medium powder is the most versatile option and what most Canadian DTF printers use for everyday production. It works well on the majority of designs and fabrics and provides excellent wash durability.
Best for:
Standard gang sheet printing
Logos and graphics 0.5" and larger
Cotton, polyester, and blended fabrics
General production use
Anti-Static DTF Powder
Anti-static powder is engineered for use in production environments where static buildup is a problem — typically with automatic powder shakers in commercial setups. It prevents powder from clumping or uneven distribution caused by static charge on the film.
Best for:
High-speed automatic shaker systems
Commercial production printers
Environments with low humidity (common in Canadian winters)
