How to Maintain Your DTF Printer: Tips from DTF Toronto

Updated: Jun 30

Printhead clogs. Banding. Poor color output. These are the nightmares of every DTF printer owner – and almost all of them are preventable with the right maintenance routine. Here's what we recommend at DTF Toronto, based on years of supporting print shops across Canada.

Daily Maintenance

  • Run a nozzle check before every print session. This takes 30 seconds and tells you immediately if something is off.

  • Cap the printer when not in use. Leaving the printhead uncapped even for a few hours accelerates drying and clogging.

  • Keep the humidity at 40–60%. Dry air is a printhead's worst enemy. Use a humidifier in your workspace if needed.

  • Wipe down the capping station with a foam swab. Ink buildup here is a leading cause of poor capping and drying issues.

Weekly Maintenance

  • Run a head cleaning cycle once or twice per week (not more – excessive cleaning wastes ink).

  • Inspect the wiper blade for wear. A worn wiper blade won't clean the printhead properly.

  • Clean the encoder strip with a lint-free cloth lightly dampened with distilled water.

  • Check ink levels and shake white ink tanks to prevent settling.

Monthly Maintenance

  • Deep clean the capping station and suction cup.

  • Inspect all ink tubes for air bubbles or blockages.

  • Check belt tension – a loose belt causes banding and misalignment.

  • Lubricate the carriage rod lightly with machine oil.

White Ink: Special Attention Required

White ink is the most maintenance-intensive DTF ink because titanium dioxide particles settle quickly. If your printer will sit unused for more than a day, always flush the white ink channel or keep the stirrer running. Using Supreme HD ink with built-in nozzle-care formula helps reduce settling significantly.

When to Replace Parts

  • Printhead: If cleaning cycles no longer restore full nozzle function, it may be time for a replacement.

  • Wiper blade: Replace every 3–6 months or when clogging issues coincide with a worn blade.

  • Capping station: Replace if suction is weak or printhead doesn't cap properly.

  • Dampers: Replace if you see air bubbles that don't resolve, or inconsistent ink flow.
