How to Choose the Right DTF Film: A Canadian Buyer's Guide

Updated: Jun 30

Choosing the right DTF film is one of the most important decisions you'll make for your print shop. The wrong film can cause peeling, poor wash resistance, or wasted ink. Here's what you need to know before buying.

DTF Film Types: Quick Peel vs. Cold Peel vs. Warm Peel

Quick peel film lets you remove the transfer film immediately after pressing while the garment is still hot. This dramatically speeds up production – no waiting, no cooling. It's the most popular choice for high-volume print shops.

Cold peel film requires you to wait until the transfer cools completely before peeling. It typically produces a slightly softer hand feel and can work better on thicker fabrics. Warm peel sits in between – peel when just barely cool.

  • Quick peel: Best for high-volume shops, faster production

  • Cold peel: Softer feel, good for thick or textured fabrics

  • Warm peel: Middle ground, versatile for most applications

What Roll Width Do You Need?

DTF film comes in several widths. Match the roll width to your printer's print width:

  • 13" (A3) – for Super Mini and desktop DTF printers

  • 17" – for mid-size printers like the 1380i

  • 24", 32", 60cm, 30cm – for wider UV DTF printers

Always check your printer's maximum print width before ordering film. At DTF Toronto, we carry rolls for all popular printer sizes, shipped from Vaughan, Ontario.

UV DTF Film: What's Different?

UV DTF film is designed for UV printers and produces transfers for hard, non-porous surfaces – phone cases, mugs, tumblers, wood, glass, and more. It comes as an AB film set: the A film is printed on, then the B film is used to laminate and apply the transfer.

UV DTF film is not interchangeable with standard DTF film – make sure you're ordering the right type for your machine.

Low-Tack vs. Standard Tack

Low-tack UV DTF film is designed for sensitive surfaces like cardboard, uncoated paper, and delicate finishes. Standard tack works on most hard surfaces including acrylic, glass, metal, and coated wood.
