How Sublimation Works
Sublimation uses heat to convert dye into a gas that bonds permanently with polyester fibres. The result is a print that's literally part of the fabric — no layer on top, no peeling, no cracking. Sublimation is ideal for sportswear, performance apparel, and promotional products.
The catch: sublimation only works on 100% polyester or polymer-coated substrates, and only on white or very light-coloured items. It can't produce true white in the design — white areas show as the garment colour.
How DTF Transfers Work
DTF (Direct-to-Film) transfers are printed onto film with a white ink underbase, coated with hot melt adhesive powder, cured, and heat pressed onto fabric. The white layer means colours stay accurate on any garment colour — black, navy, red, anything.
DTF works on cotton, polyester, blends, nylon, denim, and more. Any colour garment. Any design complexity. No pretreatment needed.

Choose DTF if you need flexibility — dark garments, cotton, mixed fabric types, full-colour designs with white elements. Most Canadian decorators who start with sublimation eventually add DTF to serve a wider range of customers.
